Picture Books

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown (Alphabet/Counting/Color/Concept)
    Summary: In a great green room there are many objects in the room to say Goodnight to before the sun goes down; Including a baby bunny, old lady bunny and a mouse. Theme is to say goodnight to all the objects in the room. I love this book because it reminds me of my childhood when I used to read this every night before I went to bed.

Alphabet Mystery by Audrey Wood (Alphabet/Counting/Color/Concept)
    Summary: Author makes the alphabet have human characters. Little x was upset that he was never used. The other letters find x playing the castle xylophone for the mysterious Master, capital M, who threatens to turn them into alphabet soup.  Some quick thinking by Little x saves the day, and soon they are all on their way home; just in time to make Mom's birthday surprise: a cake with Little x all over. He's the only one who stands for kisses! Theme is the learning the alphabet.  I liked this book because it was a spin on the learning the alphabet.

The Dangerous Alphabet by Neil Gaiman (Alphabet/Counting/Color/Concept)
    Summary: The author makes a word and explains each with a description or sentence. For example: A is for Always, that’s where we embark, B is for boat, pushing off in the dark.  This story takes the alphabet plus two children and their gazelle to battle monsters, hunt for treasure and get into all different kinds of adventures. Theme is learning the alphabet. I liked this book cause it was interesting and fun to read.

K is for Keystone by Kristen Kane (Alphabet/Counting/Color/Concept)
    Summary: This book is a alphabet book that goes through every letter with something that represents the state of Philadelphia.  Amish, Bill Cosby, Caves and Coal miners, whitetail Dear, Easton, Fallingwater, Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Inventions, James Buchanan, Keystone State, Liberty Bell, Milton Hershey, Native Americans, Ore, Punxsutawney Phil, Quakers, Rails-to-Trails, State Ship, Titusville, Underground Railroad, Valley Forge, Williamsport, X marks the spot, Yellow and blue, and Zoo.  Each letter had a four line description that rhythms. Each person, place or thing that was mentioned also had a longer description on the right or left column of the page. Theme is learning the alphabet. I liked this book because it was about the history of Philadelphia and was interesting.

On Market Street by Anita and Arnold Lobel (Alphabet/Counting/Color/Concept)
    Summary: A small boy walked down Market Street and bought a lot of things, one thing for each letter of the alphabet. He bought, apples, books, clocks, doughnuts, eggs, flowers, gloves, hats, ice cream, jewels, kites, lollipops, musical instruments, noodles, oranges, playing cards, quilts, ribbons, shoes, toys, umbrellas, vegetables, wigs, Xmas trees, yarns, and zippers. With his arms full, he could not carry anymore but he spent all his coins and walked off Market Street. All of the things he bought were presents for his friend, a cat. Theme is watch how much you spend. I liked this book because it was cute and simple and it taught words in the order of the alphabet.

Counting Kisses by Karen Katz (Alphabet/Counting/Color/Concept)
    Summary: Each page was a count down of kisses starting with 10 little kisses on teeny tiny toes for a crying and tired baby. 9 laughing kisses on busy, wriggly feet, eight squishy kisses on chubby, yummy knees, 7 loud kiss on a pretty belly button, 6 tickly kisses on baby’s dimpled chin, 5 quick kisses on an itty bitty nose, 4 warm kisses on two baby hands, 3 fuzzy kisses on sweet little ears, 2 gentle kisses on tired closing eye, and one last kiss on your sleepy, dreamy head.  The last page had a picture of a sleeping baby. Theme of this book is bedtime. I think this book was really cute and the perfect bed time story.
